You’ve heard about Jesus. You have met people who say that they are in a relationship with Him. You’ve heard claims about Him. During Christmas you learned that Christians believe that He was God with us-Emmanuel. At Easter, it would have been hard to miss hearing that Jesus died on a cross for our sin, and rose from the dead. You thought, “What an amazing story! What is sin anyway? I’ve never done anything really bad.”
You’ve heard all this, but you don’t know that it’s true. Why should it matter to you personally? These are just stories.
But, if you slow down for a moment and think about your life, you know that something is missing. “What a strange feeling. I have a good life.” You shrug off this thought, but it comes back. It haunts you like a song that you can’t get out of your head.
The desire to figure out what that missing something is drives you to talk to a God that you don’t really know: “Is it You? Are You real? I’ve heard about You and that You love me.”
In your silence you “hear” internally. “Yes, I’m real and yes, I love you.”
You think, “What do I do with this?” Is that missing something being filled? “What is this?” Then, you talk to this Voice. “Is that You, God?”
Inside you “hear” a reply. “Yes, it’s Me. I love you and I want you to know me as I know you.”
A dagger hits your heart. The reality of this conversation is wonderful and scary at the same time. There is an awareness that something is still wrong. That fact that you’re a sinner is there, although you don’t really know the term. You just know that there is an uncleanness that has to be dealt with. You’re overcome, and in honesty and humility, you tell God about it. The Voice within speaks again. “Are you willing to let me turn your life around?”
You don’t really understand why, but you are joyfully compelled to quickly reply, “Oh yes God! Please take my life.” Suddenly, you realize that your emptiness is filled. It was God that was missing, but now He’s there, right in the center of your life! There’s an understanding without much knowledge. You don’t know doctrines. You don’t know what’s in the Bible. You’re not sure what to do next. But you know that God is in you!
Later you learn that God promised to be a Light for your path. But, now you’re experiencing it without the knowledge. God reminds you of someone that you know who is a Christian. You call and tell them what happened. They joyfully respond by saying that they’ve been praying for you. “Really! That’s cool. Thank you!” You arrange to meet as soon as possible.
You get together with your friend and share your joy face to face. You ask, “What happened to me?”
“You’ve been born again!” You’re puzzled by this declaration, yet somehow you know it’s true.
“Let me explain,” Your friend continues, “from the Bible.”
Eagerly, you listen to verses from the Bible that make sense. Jesus talked about being born again. The verse that says, “For God so loved there world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life,” resonates with you. Your friend shows you other Bible verses. You understand that God loves you, but that your sin had separated you from Him. You see that Jesus really did take the punishment for your sin on the cross. You believe that He rose from the dead. You now know that what filled that missing thing inside of you was the Holy Spirit of God. He has filled your life! Your friend offers to lead you in a prayer and you eagerly consent.
“Lord Jesus, thank you for coming into my life and filling my emptiness. I know that I’m a sinner, but I willingly turn from my sin. I want to live for You. Thank You.”
You begin to read the Bible and pray daily. You go to church with your friend. You’re gaining understanding about the knowledge that you already have through your experience. You’re on your way – God’s way!
Now you’re ready to help someone else On the Way.
