“I pledge allegiance to the Christian flag and to the Savior for Whose kingdom it stands. One Savior, crucified, risen, and coming again with life and liberty to all who believe.”
I fear that some of you would be offended if the Christian flag was flown above the flag of our beloved USA. I wouldn’t, but please, stick with me. I’ll tell you why. Many of you know the pledge to the Christian flag; for others, you didn’t know such a thing existed! What does the Bible say? “… our citizenship is in heaven, from which also we eagerly wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ; Who will transform the body of our humble state into conformity with the body of His glory, by the exertion of the power that He has even to subject all things to Himself.” (Phil. 3:20-21)
Never in the history of our young country has there been a pair of candidates so disliked as the two main “president-wannabes” that we have today. I will vote on November 8th, and I trust that you will too. I am patriotic and it’s my duty and privilege to vote. But if it wasn’t for my faith in Jesus Christ, I’d be very pessimistic!
Because we are children of the One True KING, we have every reason to be very optimistic! Look at biblical His-story. Was it not in the darkest of times that the lights of believers shined the brightest? Look at the time of Daniel. The Babylonians were cruel task masters, yet we have the stories of Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. Their lights were so bright that even the king himself was converted. Except for little spurts of sovereignty, Israel was under the iron fist of wicked kingdoms from the time of the nation’s split. Christ lived, died, and rose from the grave while under Roman rule!
Friends, no matter how this election turns out, we know the Creator of this world! We are co-heirs with Christ! And He has given us a mission. Just as the English colonized the east, the Spanish the west, and the French the south and north, we have been born into the Kingdom of God to colonize earth for Heaven! Jesus said that His kingdom was (is) not of this world. We are to be in the world, but not of it.
Hard questions: Has the Church (Have we) put too much trust in earthly government? Where are we spending our time, physical and emotional energy? I recently read Michael J. Gorman’s book, READING REVELATION RESPONSIBLY. The subtitle is UNCIVIL WORSHIP and WITNESS: Following the Lamb into the New Creation. The author compares what Christians were facing in the 1st century to what we are facing now. Saying, “Jesus is Lord!” under Roman rule could cost one his or her life! Emperor worship was the order of the day. The emperor was the government in that day. This is called “civil religion.” Our temptations in America towards civil religion are much more subtle than in the days of the early church, and therefore, perhaps even more dangerous. I cannot unpack these thoughts the way Dr. Gorman did, and I encourage you to get the book and read it. It caused me to take a close look at how I view life in America as a Christian, and to carefully examine and remember where my sure Hope lies. Ultimately, I’ve experienced a wake-up call that seems to be reverberating around the country right now. Did you happen to attend Kirk Cameron’s “Revive Us” event in local theaters in October? Special guests, Francis Chan, Ben Carson, and others encouraged us – the Church – to place our focus on Jesus and His kingdom, even as we exercise our right to vote and participate in other civil obligations.
We are to be salt and light. There is so much Kingdom work to be done! At Win and Grow, we encourage ANY and ALL believers to use their spiritual gifts, personality, and God-given passion in oBEying the Great Commandments and fulfilling the Great Commission. (My emphasis on the BE in oBEy because when we BE in Christ, it’s easier to oBEy)
So, wherever each of us stands politically, we must make sure that we are centered in and on Christ and His mission. He chose for that mission to be realized through us, His citizens. We must be united in love around the cross of Christ, picking up our crosses and following Jesus. And God will help us do it! “So then, my beloved, just as you have always oBEyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure.” (Phil. 2:12-13)
I’m excited to see what God will do, in and through us, in this next season of our beloved nation’s His-story. I’m not a politician, but I’ll pray an often used phrase: God bless America! I’m confident that you all are praying with me.
